New music: Arctic Monkeys and Foo Fighters

It feels like the whole of 2010 went past with any quality rock music. All my favourite rock band seamed to want to start playing some weird kind of 80's rock hard synth pop style and throw the guitars out the windows. Well, I like guitars, so shoot me. I like them a lot together with tons of interesting electronica effects too. But not rock bands who just removed all trace of the guitar band they once was. Some examples are the latest album from The Strokes', The Editors' and Kent's latest albums. And it seams like Radiohead has stopped doing rock and guitars too.

In all of this, I am extremely happy with the latest album of Foo Fighters and what I have heard so far from the latest Arctic Monkeys album. The Foo fighters are still masters at both amazing use of rhythms and the skills of hit writing that is almost at Bon Jovi and U2 level. The songs that stick around in your mind and you just love. I need to listen more to the new album, but so far it's just great and makes me go "oh, cool! " That is not often in my musical world. Arctic Monkeys released another single from their upcoming album on their web page to, and it just sounds as great quality as always. They just have their own significant and quite brilliant signature that stays with them even if they expand and grow. Let's hope the future will see more of this at other people too. There must be time for some rock'n'roll soon now. The last years have been either metal or pop.

Friday Fun: Liam Lynch - United States of Whatever

United States of Whatever came out when I lived at a student dorm about 5 years ago. Two boys in my dorm played it all the time and I still think it's very very funny and very lovely ironic and over the top. The perfect sing along song in many ways. Liam Lynch himself is also quite an interesting guy. Among tons of other stuff he has done has directed some quite amazing music videos like "Times like these" for Foo Fighters and "Tribute" by Tenacious D. Here is the video for United States of Whatever. Enjoy! :)

Riders

Stuff that Foo Fighters want... Read more on the page

As most of you might know, bands often have a rider that gives the arranger of the concert certain instructions to what the band want them to provide. I love to read that stuff and just found an amazing site with lots of riders of famous bands and artists. I also remember reading somewhere else (I think in Norwegian news papers) that Janet Jackson requested a new toilet that no one had used ever before when she visited Oslo Spektrum a few years beack, now that is a real star. Foo Fighters want stuff like socks, lots of beer and stinky cheese. Anyways, enjoy!!

Smells like a guitar-riff?

Yesterday I watched a Norwegian music program about drummers in famous bands and Dave Grohl of Nirvana was of course mentioned. Some Norwegian drummers talked about him and they said that the drums on Smells Like Teen Spirit sounds like a guitar-riff and almost even more than the guitar-riff on the song. I think it's so so true! Can't belive that I haven't heard that before. Genius. Then again it's not that strange when you know what Dave are doing these days. And oh... I saw wish I had seen them live last night... Foo Fighters played in Oslo, and I missed it.. sigh. The things you do for the benefit of your education, ha?

I give you the You-Tube clip of the song, so that you can listen for yourself. You agree?
