This is a song I have been listening to a lot lately. It has some of the greatest drums and bass I have ever heard in my whole life. What is also very clear to me is that Thom Yorke has listened a lot to Modeselektor when he made his solo album, and at the same time it's quite clear that he must at some point has been involved with the process of writing this song as it sounds a lot different from most other Modeselektor stuff and somehow a bit Thom Yorkeish. To summarize: it's a great result of a great collaboration. I have tried to listen to Modeselektor a lot after this, but somehow it's not the same without mr. Yorke. Guess it is the magic touch somehow. Well, enjoy.

Great collaborations: Mariah Carey and Whitney Houson - When you believe
You can say much about Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, about boyfriends, husbands, drugs, divas and the rest. One think you'll never get passed though, these two woman have two of the most amazing voices the world has ever heard. Put together I think you almost reach godly excellence. Forget all you have heard about the persons and just listen to the voices. This is beautiful :)

Great collaborations: Do They Know it's Christmas? - Band Aid
Ladies and gents, it's time for some 80's Christmas-spirit. And also for another great collaboration... I mean, this must really be THE collaboration, right? Outside my windows the snow are falling so I just suddenly had a little christmassy feeling, even though I really thing it's a bit to early. I have felt other years that I have to be careful not to use up all my Christmas feeling long before Christmas so I try to wait until there is just a week or two left.
Do They Know it's Christmas? is a milestone in musical history. It was the first song like that where artists teamed up to support a charity together. This time it was a famine in Africa. I think it's a lovely song and actually almost gets a few tears in my eyes by listening to it.
The video of course has a lot of great 80's heroes in it.. Can you spot them? I know almost all of them, but I'll give you the chance to guess. Leave your guesses in the comment field under this blogpost. (Link if you are reading this in facebook). Here is the song and the amazing video ;)
And for you crazy kids, like me, that want even more about this event in musical history, you can find the documentary on this link :D Search for Band Aid at the right.

Great collaborations: Chris Martin and Noel Gallagher
This is a very strange and very fantastic thing at the same time. I couldn't belive it when I found it. I never thought Noel would even consider doing anything with Coldplay.. But here they are on a stage together with Coldplays guitarist (don't remember the name and have no time to find out right now). The whole situation is so awkward in a way. Exspecially Chris Martin looks lost from time to time. That is very rare.. He never looks lost live, but side by side with Noel (I am sure he remember growing up in the 90's too, so he has a bit of a hero-complex there). But at the same time.. It sounds really great too :) And I love the song.
Here is Live Forever with Chris Martin and Noel Gallagher:
Just when I was posting this I also found Yellow by Coldplay with the same "team". Chris looks in a lot better form her, but still nervous. What's the use of Noel coming on and playing those chords..really... I could have done that ;)

Great collaborations: Robbie Williams and Kylie Minouge - Kids
This is one of my all time favorite duets. I love the sexiness and the sassy feeling and the whole rhythm of the whole thing. Really want to make me dance and two such great entertainers. Love the bridge and the rap extra. Lovely stuff.

Great lyrics & Great collaborations: R.E.M - Be Mine
In 1996 R.E.M released the album New Adventures in Hi-Fi. I had heard Monster here and there, but the release of New Adventures was the turning stone for my interest in R.E.M and I still really really love this album, though R.E.M have so many great albums. (The whole R.E.M interest probably also sparked because my boyfriend at the time had all and everything by R.E.M on vinyl :) ). I have about 5 or 6 R.E.M songs that tower above the rest for me, much because of the lyrics. I am usually not one that listens so much to the lyrics. I tend to listen to all the musical tidbits and arrangements first, and then turn to the lyrics. That often opens a whole new dimension to the song and makes me love it even more.
In some songs though, the lyrics just penetrates the whole expression of the song and demands to be heard. One of those songs for me is Be Mine. I love the beginning with the flight sounds and the simple but beautiful build up of the song, but those lyrics almost makes me cry. It is so clear that this person wants the other one so much with such a passion and I think we all knows how that feels, don't we? I certainly do.
A few years later Thom Yorke of Radiohead also choose to do a cover of this song with the instrumentalists of R.E.M as much as I love Thom Yorkes voice, not even he can come close to Michael Stipe on this one.
Fingers crossed that they will play it on the third of september! :)

LYRICS:
(Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe)
("A speed zone up here too")
I never thought of this as funny
It speaks another world to me
I wanna be your Easter bunny
I wanna be your Christmas tree
I'll strip the world that you must live in
Of all its godforsaken greed
I'll ply the tar out of your feathers
I'll pluck the thorns out of your feet
You and me
You and me
You and me
And if I choose your sanctuary
I'll want to wash you with my hair
I'll want to drink of sacred fountains
And find the riches hidden there
I'll eat the lotus and peyote
I'll want to hear the caged-bird sing
I'll want the secrets of the temple
I'll want the finger with the ring
You and me
You and me
You and me
And if you make me your religion
I'll give you all you will need
I'll be the drawing of your breath
I'll be the cup if you should bleed
I'll be the sky above the Ganges
I'll be the vast and stormy sea
I'll be the lights that guide you inland
I'll be the visions you will see
Visions you will see
You will see
You will see
You and me
You and me
You and me
You and me
You and me
You and me

Great collaborations: Travis and Noel Gallagher
I found out that I also need a series about great collaborations. This will include great performances of two acts (artists, bands etc.) together of some form. To start it off is the quite amazing performance of Travis' "All I wanna do is rock" while on tour with Oasis. This must have been in 1997 I think. I saw Oasis on that tour and really wonders if I actually also saw Travis warming up... I have to find out if they were in Oslo. Anyways, I had this bootleg for a lot of years before I finally got to see the footage of it through YouTube about a year ago. I wish I could have seen Andy's guitar-playing too. I am sure we will return to him when I one day will write about great guitarists and great guitar solos. He and All I wanna, will be there.. hehe.
