Great lyrics: Ane Brun - The Fight Song

This song has been my favourite for years, but the last year or so I had completely forgotten about it. It's one of the greatest songs written about trying to get away from someone that you love and hate at the same time and just try to physically and psychologically rip yourself away from them. And what a cool bottleneck :) And as always, what a voice.

And wow, what a great video. I have never seen that before!

Great songs & Great lyrics: The Power of Love - Frankie goes to Hollywood

This song I have been thinking about blogging about such a long time, but forgot. This is one of the loveliest songs about love ever. It's very universal in it's lyrics and quite simple and somehow makes me shred at tear or too, but as you know by now I am a very easily moved person ;) And it somehow also felt like the right day to blog this one :) I also really like the fact that the music video has a slight Jesus-story going. To me the whole point of the Christian faith is love and the most important in my own strange interpretation of it. Care about others and they will care about you. Care about yourself and you'll care about others.
So here it is: The Power of Love.

LYRICS:

Feels like fire
I'm so in love with you
Purge the soul
Make love your goal

The power of love
A force from above
Cleaning my soul
Flame on burn desire
Love with tongues of fire
Purge the soul
Make love your goal

I'll protect you from the hooded claw
Keep the vampires from your door
When the chips are down I'll be around
With my undying, death-defying
Love for you
Envy will hurt itself
Let yourself be beautiful
Sparkling love, flowers
And pearls and pretty girls
Love is like an energy
Rushin' rushin' inside of me

The power of love
A force from above
Cleaning my soul
Flame on burn desire
Love with tongues of fire
Purge the soul
Make love your goal

This time we go sublime
Lovers entwine-divine divine
Love is danger, love is pleasure
Love is pure-the only treasure

I'm so in love with you
Purge the soul
Make love your goal

The power of love
A force from above
Cleaning my soul
The power of love
A force from above
A sky-scraping dove

Flame on burn desire
Love with tongues of fire
Purge the soul
Make love your goal

I'll protect you from the hooded claw
Keep the vampires from your door

It's also quite interesting that this song is on the same album of Frankie goes to Hollywood as "Relax". That is a very very different feeling song and video, but also great in it's own way :) hehe

Great songs & great lyrics: Samson - Regina Spektor

This is another one of those songs that just hit me so hard and just makes me cry because it's so beautiful. The voice is so piercingly beautiful and she does some amazing melody lines in there... and it all sound so so easy and playful. And it's very simple and very emotional. It has such a nice lyric and so much emotion in it. I like the studio version the most, but it's not on YouTube unfortunately. So here is a good live one too.

You are my sweetest downfall
I loved you first, I loved you first
Beneath the sheets of paper lies my truth
I have to go, I have to go
Your hair was long when we first met

Samson went back to bed
Not much hair left on his head
He ate a slice of wonder bread and went right back to bed
And history books forgot about us and the bible didn't mention us
The bible didn't mention us, not even once

You are my sweetest downfall
I loved you first , I loved you first
Beneath the stars came falling on our heads
But there just soft light, there just soft light
Your hair was long when we first met

Samson came to my bed
Told me that my hair was red
He told me i was beautiful and came into my bed
Oh I cut his hair myself one night
A pair of dull scissors and the yellow light
And he told me that I'd done alright
and kissed me till the morning light, the morning light
and he kissed me till the morning light

Samson came back to bed
not much hair left on his head
Ate a slice of wonderbread and went right back to bed
Oh, we couldn't bring the columns down
Yeah we couldn't destroy a single one
And history books forgot about us
And the bible didn't mention us, not even once

You are my sweetest downfall
I loved you first

Great songs & great lyrics: The boy with the bubblegun - Thom McRae

This is another one of those songs that just digs into your soul and you just have to listen to. I love his voice, love the presence in the song, love the lyrics and really have to listen to Tom McRae more...!! (Oh and I thought the lyrics was " the boy with the bubblegum for about a year.. that is also very cool I think). The lyrics are so strong... I can't even comment them.. Read yourself. It's a masterpiece.

Welcome to the second reel glad that you could make it
We thought your fate was sealed its not what we expected
But you punch above your weight and youre stronger than you look
And the endings not the same they changed it from the book

Im the boy with the bubblegun
Im taking aim
I cannot hit to hurt or cause you pain
If words could kill Id spell out your name

Its time to kill the king its written in the scripture
See what tomorrow brings got to get a bigger picture
So forgive me forgive me for I am born to be what I must be and I must be

The boy with the bubblegun Im taking aim
I cannot hit to hurt or cause you pain
If words could kill Id spell out your name
Im the boy with the bubblegun
The boy with the bubblegun
Im the boy with the bubblegun with work to do
If songs could kill this ones for you

Great songs & funny: The teenagers - Homecoming

This is one of the most brilliant songs ever! I just randomly heard it for the first time LastFm. The Teenagers are from France, so I love how they in their song "Homecoming" are ironizeing at one level of American teenagers and at the same time also kind of English teenagers.. Most of all it's really funny because she assumes he's British but he's probably french... Kind of reminds me of "Summer nights" from Grease.. I basically think the lyrics speak for themselves. Love that poptronic sound more and more. Gotta listen to more French music..

last week i flew to san diego to see my antie
on day 1 i met her hot step daughter
shes a cheerleader, she is a virgin and she is really tan
as she stepped out of her massive car
i could only notice she was more than fuckable
i think she was coming back from the game or something
cause she was holding those silly pompoms
on day 2 i fucked her and it was wild
she is such a slut

i fucked my american cunt
i loved my english romance
i fucked my american cunt
i loved my english romance
it was dirty a dream came true
just like i like it shes got nice tits
it was perfect a dream came true
just like a song by blink182

ok listen girls
i met the hottest guy ever
basically as I was stepping out of my s.u.v.
i came face to face with my step cousin or whatever
who cares
anyway he was wearing skinny jeans had funky hair
and the cutest british accent ever
straight away I could tell he was a rocker
with his sexy attitude and the way he looked at me
mmm he is totally awesome
oh my god I think im in love

i fucked my american cunt
i loved my english romance
i fucked my american cunt
i loved my english romance
it was dirty a dream came true
just like i like it shes got nice tits
it was perfect a dream came true
just like a song by blink182

i fucked my american cunt
i loved my english romance
i fucked my american cunt
i loved my english romance

Great songs & great lyrics: God - John Lennon

As most other people in the world, I am also a fan of The Beatles, but I have always liked John Lennon more than Paul for some reason. I always like his songs more. I have been listening a lot to different LastFm radio stations lately and suddenly this song came quite randomly that made me really listen to the lyrics. I rarely do that, so it was quite exceptional. It turned out that it was "God" by John Lennon. I love how intense his voice is in this one and how he screams the lyrics from his soul. They are so raw and straight forward and for the most part I agree with him. I love how they describe the state of mind he was in and how there was really no sense in most things.. Hearing him: "I don't believe in The Beatles" and how the dream is over is quite overpowering... :) I also love "I was the walrus, but now I am John".

More about the song on Wikipedia
.

Apperantly this is an alternate version, but this is the one I first heard, so it's my favorite.

This the official version with some quite sad but good footage connected to the death of John Lennon:

God is a concept,
By which we can measure,
Our pain,
I'll say it again,
God is a concept,
By which we can measure,
Our pain,
I don't believe in magic,
I don't believe in I-ching,
I don't believe in bible,
I don't believe in tarot,
I don't believe in Hitler,
I don't believe in Jesus,
I don't believe in Kennedy,
I don't believe in Buddha,
I don't believe in mantra,
I don't believe in Gita,
I don't believe in yoga,
I don't believe in kings,
I don't believe in Elvis,
I don't believe in Zimmerman,
I don't believe in Beatles,
I just believe in me,
Yoko and me,
And that's reality.
The dream is over,
What can I say?
The dream is over,
Yesterday,
I was dreamweaver,
But now I'm reborn,
I was the walrus,
But now I'm John,
And so dear friends,
You just have to carry on,
The dream is over.

Great live clips and great lyrics: Elton John -Rocket Man

For years and years I have kind of hated Elton John, but since this song was on that before mentioned commercial I have really fallen in love with it. This is a great live version of Elton in 1976 sans wig or hat. But with big glasses and lovely pianoplaying.

I also have fallen totally in love with the lyrics:
She packed my bags last night pre-flight
Zero hour nine a.m.
And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then
I miss the earth so much I miss my wife
It's lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight

And I think it's gonna be a long long time
Till touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I'm a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact it's cold as hell
And there's no one there to raise them if you did
And all this science I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week
A rocket man, a rocket man

And I think it's gonna be a long long time...

Great lyrics & Great collaborations: R.E.M - Be Mine

In 1996 R.E.M released the album New Adventures in Hi-Fi. I had heard Monster here and there, but the release of New Adventures was the turning stone for my interest in R.E.M and I still really really love this album, though R.E.M have so many great albums. (The whole R.E.M interest probably also sparked because my boyfriend at the time had all and everything by R.E.M on vinyl :) ). I have about 5 or 6 R.E.M songs that tower above the rest for me, much because of the lyrics. I am usually not one that listens so much to the lyrics. I tend to listen to all the musical tidbits and arrangements first, and then turn to the lyrics. That often opens a whole new dimension to the song and makes me love it even more.

In some songs though, the lyrics just penetrates the whole expression of the song and demands to be heard. One of those songs for me is Be Mine. I love the beginning with the flight sounds and the simple but beautiful build up of the song, but those lyrics almost makes me cry. It is so clear that this person wants the other one so much with such a passion and I think we all knows how that feels, don't we? I certainly do.

A few years later Thom Yorke of Radiohead also choose to do a cover of this song with the instrumentalists of R.E.M as much as I love Thom Yorkes voice, not even he can come close to Michael Stipe on this one.

Fingers crossed that they will play it on the third of september! :)

The song with R.E.M Album version
R.E.M and Thom Yorke Version 1 version 2

LYRICS:
(Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe)

("A speed zone up here too")

I never thought of this as funny
It speaks another world to me
I wanna be your Easter bunny
I wanna be your Christmas tree

I'll strip the world that you must live in
Of all its godforsaken greed
I'll ply the tar out of your feathers
I'll pluck the thorns out of your feet
You and me
You and me
You and me

And if I choose your sanctuary
I'll want to wash you with my hair
I'll want to drink of sacred fountains
And find the riches hidden there

I'll eat the lotus and peyote
I'll want to hear the caged-bird sing
I'll want the secrets of the temple
I'll want the finger with the ring
You and me
You and me
You and me

And if you make me your religion
I'll give you all you will need
I'll be the drawing of your breath
I'll be the cup if you should bleed
I'll be the sky above the Ganges
I'll be the vast and stormy sea
I'll be the lights that guide you inland
I'll be the visions you will see
Visions you will see
You will see
You will see
You and me
You and me
You and me
You and me
You and me
You and me
