Water on Mars!

This might be a huge discovery in our lives. NASA has found water on Mars. It indicates that there might have been life on Mars to. Impossible to know what to say. Thunderstorms tonight again... Argh!

More from James Houston

I finally had time to check out the rest of James' profile on YouTube and also found his homepage. You might remember him from an earlier post of mine when I found his version of Nude by Radiohead. This man is just an amazing talent. Click into his hompage or watch another one of his great videos underneath. This is what he says about this video himself:

The virus manifests itself in the form of the colour black, which contrasts against the boring white clinical environments that it infects. The campaign is untitled. It is held together by a concept and aesthetic alone.

It uses the viral property of self-replicating cells to alter the experience of a range of dull environments. In this example, the unseen virus replicates a disheartened office worker. He multiplies and creates a primal and liberating audio composition, thus rejecting the office and embracing creativity. The virus can not be seen although its effects are clearly visible.

The virus infects all of the MTV owned channels (including VH1 and TMF) and works as a drip campaign: as a feature video is played on one channel (in example the office scene), the main infected person creeps over onto the other channels - popping up in music videos, adverts or other content. These unexplained cameo appearances would tease and intrigue the viewer, and only when they see the main feature is everything revealed.

Great music videos: Justice - D.A.N.C.E

I really like the catchyness and elegance of French music. I am a huge fan of Phoenix and I also really like this Jusice track. The video is such a cool idea too. Blank white t-shirts with a lot of animation on them. Great stuff. Makes me groove in front of the screen and sing along.

Ah... Yes, and bit of triviata about Justice. Apparently the manager of Daft Punk used the money he earned on them to make a record label called... oh... I don't remeber... Ed... Ed something... Let me look it up.... Ah..! Ed Banger.. Headbanger in French because the H is silent in the beginning of French words. Anyways... He signed Justice to Ed Banger, so here you go :)

Great music videos: Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the heart

I saw this on tv just before I went to bed last night. It's the strangest video ever. I really like the song believe it or not because it has so many strange themes and parts. And it also gives me some childhood memories and memories from the Norwegian band Hurra Torpedo that plays the song on kitchen appliances like fridges, freezers etc. (I am saving that one for it's own post later):)

But this video is pure crazy... It has moons, fencers, wind and lots of it, chiffon, doves, american football players, tribe dancers dancing around Bonnie in circles (Eclipses?), wings, gymnasts, marshal arts dancers with wails, choirboys speeding through air and schoolboys with shining eyes (Turn around.. bright eyes). They have used every effect that they can. Including the famous "blurry-filter" that you can see on stuff from the 80's and series like "Days of Our lives" today. The video is pretty much just as over the top as the song. hehe (The last part where one of the school boys sings falsetto with bright eyes really cracks me up). There seams to be some "Bonnie-with-a-school-boy-fantazy" going on through this video, my god. hehe

Here it is

Great commercials: HP - The computer is personal again

I watch a lot of tv and I believe that some commercials are actually works of art. I really really like the HP series with famous people talking about how and for what they use their computer. Some of my favorite artists are also featured like Michel Gondry (I am sure I will have at least one blog just about him later), Jay-Z (that I really respect as a great producer.. I am sure there will be a blog about him sooner or later too )..

I love how the commercial uses great effects and at the same time tells the story of the people without showing something as personal as their head and face. That way the story gets really personal and makes pictures in you head in a new way. You also go through the whole thing wondering who this person is, before it's revealed in the end. So I am gonna post them now without telling you who the persons are. So that you can get a bit excited and amazed about this people too. You should watch them embedded if you can, at my blog site. If you open the link, the name of the clip will be revealed at YouTube. The first one actually chocked me the most as a I didn't really think that this person could be like that.

Great music videos: Christina Aguilera - Ain't no other man

Since I was doing my last post on 1920's inspired videos I remembered this one by Christina Aguilera. It also has a bit of that gangster feel and I love how the beginning sounds like it's of an really really old record. And my God... This girl can sing. She sometimes almost brings me to tears just by the intensity in her voice. Just so powerful and so on time and so under control. Here is the video.

Great music videos: LeAnn Rimes - Nothing better to do

I love the colors and the shapes and the 1920's style of this video. The song is really catchy too and makes wanna dance around and be a bad girl, maybe because of the video. Perfect match of video and song I think. Oh, and I really like have they have made the dance in the end look slightly charleston-like, like it really is from the 1920's. This video is very cool to be a country song and makes me not thin country at all and gives me a whole new side to LeAnn and makes me really love her voice. So here you go, some prison in the 1920's fun for bad girls.

Great covers: Radiohead drums

I somehow ended up watching drum covers of Radiohead songs, so I just have to share a few of them. I love covers (great one that is) so I am starting a new series for that too :)

First of we have Bodysnatchers done brilliantly by Mike Scavio:

Then 15 step by Chris Anderson

And finally 2+2=5 by saib0t666
With great great comments in the beginning.

Vadrum the drummer (and Mario Bros)

I found Vadrums profile on YouTube quite a while ago and he does this great drum covers on well known song. I subscribe to his videos so today I got one of his new videos, and this time he does Tenaciouse D / Bach. Very cool. The man can really play and does really impressive double bass drums. Maybe it's just me that thinks drums is extra amazing since I find it so hard to play myself, but I am pretty sure the man does not suck... hehe

Here is the new clip and another great medley of the Super Mario 2 music that was the first one I heard and my favorite so far. No that's wrong I like Super Mario (1) even better

The development of Coldplay - Death and all his friends

I might be wrong... about Brian Eno.

I might have to take back all the wrong things I've ever said about Brian Eno. Death and all his friends, a new song from the new Coldplay album that he produced is just a masterpiece when it comes to arr. and production. And that's not all. I think that the song actually sums up the whole musical development of Coldplay through their career, and if I am right we have good things coming in the future.

The song starts very traditional with a cute little melody and Chris sweet voice while he plays piano and a pretty little guitar solo on top. THEN... about 1: 19 the first miracle happens, and I think this is quite similar to the more rocked up version we have found increasingly on Coldplays last 2 albums. And the build up is just amazing. Layer on layer of voices and God knows what, before the drums really hit us and and this whole theme is very lovely rock, swingy Coldplay that I like. The melody also becomes a bit more complex THEN!! WHAT then... at 2: 19 something unheard of and amazing and wild happens.... Coldplay flies into an amazing 7/8 theme... And how well they do it to. The really sad thing is that they repeat that part of the song only twice and then it's suddenly over... And the bass, the bass is amazing on this song. It lifts the song and makes it groove. I think in general that the bass on this record is the best that I've heard Coldplay.

I have never heard Coldplay play around like this and even put in 7/8. They have always been masters of build ups and great themes that makes you chill to the bones, but this is something different and more exciting. I have never heard them like this. They are almost almost getting near the genius of Radioheads now... But I have a sneaking suspicion that this all might be very much thanks to the genius of Brian Eno. I can heard that someone has guided this whole thing firmly in one production and opened up and added instruments and all that at the perfect moment, and I really don't think that the boys in Coldplay can have done this all by themselves. Sorry. One of my favorite things that he has added acoustic guitar at the great moment when all the drums come booming in to make the effect even stronger. Music with layers is always the most exciting, because you find new great parts all the time. And if this is development continues I am looking forward to the rest :)

Here the song is ;)

TV: David Letterman and Oprah

As you might know, David Letterman has tried for many many years (16,5) to get Oprah to be a guest at his show. I can't believe that he actually made it finally. We used to have The Late Show on tv in Norway, but not anymore, and I really miss it, and can't believe that I missed it. Thank god for YouTube! Dave starts of with Dave vs Oprah, tonights top 10 list and other fun. Ah... Dave, I have missed you. I am sure there will be more of him later in this blog too. Norwegian Technical Museum

Not to long ago, can't remember when anymore... hehe, me and two friends decided to take a trip to The Norwegian Technical Museum because they had a visitor staying with them. It was such a fun day!! We were almost like little kids. I think the story is best told using photos:
My favorite old car, the T-Ford.

Funny machine with balls going through all kinds of loops and paths.
Machine where the liquid inside makes patterns when you turn it around and around.
Quite amusing :)
Pink Floyd:)
Excebition about global wraming with water on the floor and ice that is melting. Amazing.
As a part of the exhibition you could answer to certain questions and give your opinions about solutions to the problem of global warming. Look at the boots!

Time laps

Just found one more brilliant movie that DavidtheProGamer made. It's a time laps of his 15th birthday and I really really liked it. The music fits perfectly and I love watching the patterns in the movement and I like that fast pace along with the calm music, made me really relaxed somehow. Great idea and great video. Enjoy.. 15 hours in 4 minutes!

(I am now post videos both as links and embedded because one can't see the embedded when it's added as posts on Facebook. I'll try to remember to do both.. hehe)

Favorite Coldplay parts

As I might have told you before, I love the simplicity of Coldplay's melodies and as I was watching different live clips on YouTube of Coldplay's new song 42 this evening I found this wonderful clip. The great DavidtheProGamer has made a best of Coldplay collection-clip and it has almost all my favorite parts of Coldplay songs too (except 42). (For more about 42, click on 42 on the label cloud) So if you want a quick fix of Coldplay and their greatest
moments watch this :)

Great music videos: Rilo Kiley - The Moneymaker

This is a really crazy video. I have seen it while back on tv, and just didn't have the time to watch the whole thing, but tonight I did. The whole thing starts by interviews with three porn stars that are then featured throughout the whole video. It's to bad that this video on YouTube lack a lot of the interviews but it's the only thing I can find online. It kind of gives a glimpse into this world that one knows nothing about, how porn actors/actresses are when they don't make porn. The video is making fun of the stereotype porn situations a bit without being more dirty then a little kissing really. There might be more, since I didn't watch it really closely, so sorry if I offend someone. Sounds like a quite good band too, so I have to check them out more I think...

New Music: The Fashion - Like Knives

I just watched my favorite music video program on tv Flipside on VH1. I almost always find great new bands and music there and it also features at least one of two of my favorite bands. Today I had all ready enjoyed Babyshambles and Arctic Monkeys before a new great video turned up. I saw it and heard it without even knowing who it was. I found out that it is The Fashion with the song Like Knives. I really really liked the style of the video and have to check out The Fashion some more I think. But first of all this is Like Knives. I love how they use the flashcards!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEHUAlk0-Pk

I actually really like a Sonic Youth song

I have had a hard time really liking Sonic Youths music, though they are such legends, but few minutes ago the video for Sunday flickered over my tv screen, and I really liked it. It might be because of the video that is in it self very cool as Macaulay Culkin is playing a part that is very very far from the kid in Home Alone. It made me realize that he is actually quite beautiful. Enjoy!

Film: Rebel without a cause

Finally I got the chance to see this movie. I have wanted to see James Dean act for such a long time, and damn, that man is a good actor and one goodlooking one too. I am so impressed on how real he makes his roles comes across. Looking forward to see more and see this again without having to do other stuff at the same time.

Oh, and my mum pointed out that James Dean look a lot like Brad Pitt. She had seen it on the net, and it's really true I think. They have that same kind of magnetism and smile and nose and are both handsome but also brilliant actors too. I think people often forget that when it comes to Brad Pitt.

TV: Band of Brothers

The best tv-series I have ever seen in my life is "Band of Brothers". Just hearing the intro gives me a almost religious feeling. I always knew I would like the series because it is about world war 2. So my friend lend it to me on a Sunday evening and I decided to put it on and watch an episode or two since I had nothing better to do. This was about 4 in the afternoon. I got totally hooked and kept watching until 6 the next morning.

What I love so much is first of all that the whole thing is true. It's real story about real people, not fake like for instance "Saving Private Ryan" though that is also a great movie. Secondly all the actors (except one that is only there in the start) are not famous so you don't keep thinking about other parts they have played and really just identifies them with that role and think of them as connected to the person they play in a more true way. Thirdly the camera angles the colors and the flow is better than anything I have ever seen in my life. This most be the best think Steven Spielberg has ever done as a producer, and that says a lot. So just sit down and be aware that you might get hooked to, moved, thrilled and just have the experience of your life. I am watching the series now for the 4th time with a friend and it just keeps getting better.
I post the opening sequence below. It also includes some statements from the real people the series is about. The real soldiers of the E Company ("Easy Company") of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, United States Army 101st Airborne Division. They don't tell you who they are until the last episode or the documentary that is about the series and the real men. This gives it an extra dimension to the series and makes it even more true in a way. You can see how these men are more or less all the time moved almost to tears as they give their statements about the events they went through. The events and experiences are so horrific at times, but the friendships are also just as amazing. It says so much about people in extreem situations and makes it all so basic somehow. I like that. I wish it could be that basic sometimes, without being so horrible at the same time.

Oh yes, and the music is amazing. So glad John Williams didn't do it and that they choose Michael Kamen instead.

The series homepage and more can be found by clicking on the links above.

Riders

Stuff that Foo Fighters want... Read more on the page

As most of you might know, bands often have a rider that gives the arranger of the concert certain instructions to what the band want them to provide. I love to read that stuff and just found an amazing site with lots of riders of famous bands and artists. I also remember reading somewhere else (I think in Norwegian news papers) that Janet Jackson requested a new toilet that no one had used ever before when she visited Oslo Spektrum a few years beack, now that is a real star. Foo Fighters want stuff like socks, lots of beer and stinky cheese. Anyways, enjoy!!

Coldplay 42

When I first heard the new Coldplay album I really really didn't like it all that much. After listening to it a few time though "42", just keep getting better and better and I really really start to love that song. So take a listen folks it starts of very typichal Coldplay but I love how it changes half way. Please Chris, play guitar not piano.. hehe :D

(more about the album and mr. Eno's influence some other time)

Funny: Oh Danny Boy

This one just makes me laugh so much... I especially love it when Beaker sings with the very high pitch voice and animal hates it...

Musical Memories: Kent

More photos here

My relation to Kent started all the way back in about 1997. I must have heard the single "If you where here /Om du vär her" somewhere and on our class trip to Praha we drove through Sweden. The song somehow summed up the whole feeling of being away from someone you love. I had a long-distance-byfriend at the time, so I really identified with it. On a gass station somewhere in Sweden I bought my first Kent record "Isola". I listened to the cd all the way to Praha and back and was utterly hooked on all the great guitar melodies, the lovely vocal of Jocke and his great lyrics and what I have found out later is that special Kent rhytm. it's the same in all their songs and very very Kent, and makes it good no matter what they do. It's a kind of slow groovy 4/4. Kent later released the album in english and I still can't belive that such a great album can sound that horrible in just another language. No sir, Kent it English does not work at all for me.

In 1999 came Hagnesta Hill with some, if not the, greatest lyrics of Kent. At the same time, I started University and at some point in 2000 I was standing outside the institute of theatre and music and started talking to a girl. In a few minutes we realized that we both loved both Kent and The Wannadies and was utterly thrilled that there were someone else in the world that knew about this great music and loved it at much. This became the foundation of a great friendship that still has a strong flavor of the common love of great music.

I saw Kent for the frist time in this periode somehow... I do not really remember when, and in might even have been later. I was just a few meters awway from the stage and it was great. Mew also did the warm-ups so we also discovered another great rock-band that night. Ah,.. I found it now... May 2002. I also saw them again the same summer when I was at the Quart festival. This turned out to be the greatest year so far when it comes to sucess for Kent in Norway. In October 2002 they actually played the biggst stage in Oslo , Spektrum, for 8000 people. At this time the hype started to kill my Kent-feeling, because half of the people there was just there to sing along with the monster-hits from the album that was released that year "Vapen & Ammunition". I was quite happy when they said "Let's play some old rock'n'roll" and did the song " Kräm". Then you could see all the "new-comers" get shocked and all of us "oldies" jumping violently.

Here is Kräm (it's still one of my favorite songs):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py9c079V3Dg

That whole hype of 2002 killed my Kent interesst for some time. I just couldn't help it. I know it's very stuck up and posh and anything to not like things when they are to hyped, but I am just like that. When people has to many opinions on what I should think of a certain song or band or cd I can't listen to it... I just have to wait...

So ... I haven't actually really listened to the two latest Kent Albums... The fact that one of the bands to guitarplayers left the band also contributed to me not wanna listen to them because I have always love the guitars of Kent so.. It has been a bit sad, but I just couldn't. About a few weeks ago though my friend sendt me a great link. It was a summer calender of Kent clips from their new studio, so I had to watch, and the more I watch them I realize that I have missed them, so now I think it's about time to really dig into those two last albums that I haven't really listened to.... I think it might be time now to refind old long lost love... hehe ;)

Dexter

I am doing some subtitles for Dexter today and tomorrow, and I have just seen the intro and it's bloody amazing!! So I had to share it in my blog. Looks like a quite good show too.. (My lucky day, since I though I was doing 50 minutes of Dexter the cartoon... haha!)

Bruce Springsteen

On the last Tuesday the 8th I kind of saw Bruce live. I have never been a huge Bruce fan, but after all he is a legend and his songs are part of events in my life. I remember spending a long time as a child trying to figure out what that was in his back pocket on the cover of "Born in the USA". I had never seen a baseball cap and it was just a few years ago that I realized that that is what it is. Back then I think I settled for some kind of a fancy pocket. So, when my friend and band colleague suggested that we would go to the concert and see the and hear the whole thing from outside the fences and just take part in the experience I thought: "Why not, then I can say that I have seen Bruce and 80 000 people over two nights can't be that wrong?" Norway is a small country and any artist that can gather that many people must be worth seeing. My personal opinion is that Bruce has been the object of a great hype in Norway the last years and it's very very popular to like him, I think that has a lot to do with it, but at the same time, the man is one hell of an entertainer and he has simple but catchy tunes.

So we gathered on a little hill behind the stage and watched from there for a while but there was really no view from there and horrible sound, so we decided to move on in between the trees. A lot better sound quality down there, people climbing trees and we could even see one of the big screens when ever Bruce decided to go for a walk around stage.

And when he played "Born in the USA" I also had a chill down my spine. That is such a great classic and they played it so tight and good. I also really missed to of my favourites "Streets of Philadelphia" and "The River". I really love those songs and was sad that they were not played... The things that were played was filled with energy, spirit and excitement, but to me the songs feel a bit dull. It's the same bass and drum line again and again... I guess if you love it, you love all of it, but just not really my cup of tea. It was great seeing the concert with some Americans though. Made me realize that Bruce is to them almost like De Lillos are too us, the universal rock icon. That captures the soul of a whole people. And THAT you gotta respect, when it not only applies to Americans but too people everywhere, Norwegians included. It's universal in a way, Bruce's music. I am tempted to write simple music for simple minds, but that would sound all wrong. I mean that it's just immediate and you know what you get and simple in a good kind of way. Hm... Sometimes to simple, dull and a bit boring for my liking but he definitivly has his amazing moments and deserve the status as a legend. You feel the greatness, and the love that all of those 40 000 people feel for the man and the music. Unfortunately the same 40 000 consists of maybe 80% people that haven't been to Oslo the last 15 years. That results in a bus trip home for me taking 90 minutes instead of the usual 30 ;)

Bruce doesn't actually travel light, does he? ;)

New Music: Apparat

Sometimes one can be really lucky when clicking around on the internet. Today that kind of happened to me. I put my "listen to your neighbourhood" radio on Last.fm* on and out came Modeselektor. They kind of triggered my interest as I found myself sitting and rocking in front of the computer to music I had no idea what was. It was just really groovy and delightful and happy. I remembered my discussion last night with a friend about what kind of electronica I like, and decided to investigate. So I went into their page to see what where their similar artists, and there I found Apparat. Beautiful vocals ala Sigur Rós, Aqualung and A-ha, cool beats ala Radiohead, and a bit of the mood of my all time favorites Lali Puna. There is also a tiny bit of the jazz of st. Germain in there. Well, ME like :D I am actually liking it even more and more the more I listen to it right now, so knock yourselves out. I need to check out Modeselektor more too, but that will be another project another day. And oh.. listen to more than one song by apperat, they are turning out to be quite different.

This is a link to the MySpace page:
http://www.myspace.com/apparat

* Last.fm is a great site that tracks all the music you listen too and as a result you can listen to several radios, see lists of what you listen too, find similar artists, write blogs and find out who listen to the same as you. Go here for more info.

More intensity

Everybody keeps talking about Bruce Springsteens intensity on stage these days. I attended the concert by looking over the wall and at the screens and standing outside the arena and yes, the man is a legend and definitely know how to rock, but if you want intensity, then take a look at this... This almost kills me to watch, makes me cry and give me the chills. Thats intensity and joy of playing and some incredible guitarplaying, timing and feeling. ENJOY.

(For more on the raconteurs, before this was released as a single clip on youtube, see my earlier posts. More about the Springsteen-concert and photos will be added soon )

The Raconteurs - Blue Vains

Nude remix

This is just truely amazingly innovative. Radiohead released the song Nude on their last album In Rainbows and this amazing person, James Houston, set out to make a remix and in the process uses scanners, harddrives, printers and a tv to make the sounds. This is beautiful and art, I think. Take a look. If the tv sound in the beginning drives you nuts, please just scan forward in the file to around 1 minute :)

Great collaborations: Travis and Noel Gallagher

I found out that I also need a series about great collaborations. This will include great performances of two acts (artists, bands etc.) together of some form. To start it off is the quite amazing performance of Travis' "All I wanna do is rock" while on tour with Oasis. This must have been in 1997 I think. I saw Oasis on that tour and really wonders if I actually also saw Travis warming up... I have to find out if they were in Oslo. Anyways, I had this bootleg for a lot of years before I finally got to see the footage of it through YouTube about a year ago. I wish I could have seen Andy's guitar-playing too. I am sure we will return to him when I one day will write about great guitarists and great guitar solos. He and All I wanna, will be there.. hehe.
Without further ado: Travis and Noel:

Blur discovery, coffee & tv

For about 5 years at least if not a lot more I have loved the song Coffee & tv by Blur. Yesterday I came to an amazing realization. It is actually Graham Coxon who is singing the verses!!! Oh dear, how can I not have heard that. Now that I know, I do NOT understand how I ever can have thought it was Damon. Well, this was a huge discovery in my little life... I doubt that anyone else in the world care at all... haha.. Anyways: here is a live video :

Musical memories: Guns N' Roses

In about 1992 a new kind of music hit me. Up till then I had been listening to a lot of a-ha and pop stuff basically. But then i discovered Guns N' Roses. We was a few years behind here in the countryside of Norway so Nirvana didn't hit until just before Cobain died, at least not me. So we also got to hear Guns N' a little bit late. I think my fetish with wanting to play guitar might have started when I heard Slash play and was reinforced by hearing Jimi Hendrix the year later, and Bryan Adams, but more about that some other time.

I remember listening to Don't Cry and November Rain in long nights thinking about cute boys in school and rocking to Sweet Child of mine... Wait a second... Bon Jovi must have been before all this... hm... Ok, so I might actually have got that guitar thing from Richie?? That's a bit frightening. Let's stick with Slash for now. I remember my friend had a huge crush on him, and I just loved that guitar playing... I saw him live as a part of Velvet Revolver a few years back, and though it wasn't Guns N' Roses, it was still quite special. A childhood.. Well, early teenager... hero.

So i give you November Rain.. The song with two guitar-solos. It's almost like a small opera or something.. :

And for some rock n' roll :

Great Voices: Damon Albarn

I have said it before and I will say it again: "Let Damon Albarn sing anything, and I will listen". It's just something about that voice and that man that makes me just sit and look into the air, with an empty look in my eyes, and listen. And he has that beautiful kind of tender, but tough boyish-charm thing going, that just captivates me.. hehe. Anyways, for all of you that though Damon is only about Boys and girls, or haven't heard him at all, here are a few of my favourite thihttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifngs :)

Blur - Essex Dogs (My blog post about this song, great lyrics etc.)

With The Good, The Bad and The queen - Kingdom of Doom

Blur - Out of time

Blur - Beetlebum
